INTRO TO PUBLIC SPEAKING

Gain practical advice on how to identify areas where you can improve on your public speaking skills and successful strategies for actual improvement. Learn from the firsthand experience of Jennifer Romine, how to go from public presentation novice to savvy spokesperson through external feedback, self reflection, practice, and some tried and true tips and tricks. Jennifer Romine taught Communication 101: Intro to Public Speaking at the University of Illinois while finishing a Ph.D in Political Science and currently works at the University YMCA.

Fundraising is critical for a successful student group or organization, but it’s also a key skill that you’ll use in the real world beyond your student group. Through this fundraising workshop, students will learn fundraising opportunities and strategies, methods, and the technology behind fundraising as well as how to work together to accomplish successful events as a group or organization. Emily Cross is the Development Officer at the University YMCA and a past student of the Y. She has a huge passion for student programs in light of the impact they made on her life. Emily received her Bachelor of Sciences at Illinois in Earth, Society and Environment and her Master’s in Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Springfield. DINNER WILL BE PROVIDED.

Did you know that having a communications plan for your organization is the first step in developing a solid media relations campaign for your cause? Communications Director, Megan Flowers covers the key elements of a communications strategy using exercises to establish goals, target audiences, and develop messages that move people to action as well as how press/PR plans, web strategies and marketing plans fit into your organization's overall communications strategy. Megan Flowers has acted as Communications Director of the University YMCA since 2012. She has trained with Chicago-based Community Workshop, Constant Contact, University of Illinois Center for Global Studies, and YMCA of the USA.

This interactive workshop will guide scholars through the messy design process: from selecting a topic to developing curriculum. This workshop will be scheduled based on scholar availability.
