Welcome
Over 100 Years of Leadership
The University YMCA has been building leadership for over 100 years. Over the years, its style may have changed. But its substance - its heart - has remained the same. For generations, the YMCA has developed young adults whose principles and values come first. And, at the Y, the more things change - the more they remain the same.
Some of the Y's early programs were absolutely critical to building a knowledgeable capable, student body. Many of those programs, started at the Y, have become major programs of the University.
Today, the YMCA remains a vital part of university life. Physically and morally at the heart of the campus, it invites students, faculty, and staff to join together to act on the values they believe in. The building itself is a symbol - but while it is built on a strong foundation, it is serious need of basic upgrades to internal systems such as heating, plumbing, and electricity.
The Legacy of Leadership fundraising campaign is now underway to underwrite the cost of basic upgrades to the YMCA's historic building. When complete, the Legacy of Leadership campaign will have ensure the future of the YMCA - well into the 21 st century.
Support the Capital Campaign
The YMCA building stands at the heart of the University. As it has since 1937, it provides a home away from home for students and faculty, a base for YMCA student programs, and a place for a wide range of activities run by and for the University community.
The YMCA stands for student leadership, involvement, principles, and values. It's a solid structure, with a solid foundation and infrastructure. Its facade and interior spaces are still in good shape, but the YMCA building is aging rapidly.
Without significant upgrades and renovations, it will continue to decline. At present, for example, the building has only one heating zone: the temperature varying drastically from room to room. The original slate tiles are falling off of the roof, creating a hazard for, among others, the thousands of students who walk past the building each day. Plumbling is leaky, and leaks mean water damage and high water bills. Electrical systems must be updated and safety must be ensured. Installation of an elevator to afford accessibility is another goal. That is why it is so important to repair and refurbish the building as soon as possible - to guarantee its usefulness well into the new century.
In sum, we need to make sure our stewardship continues to keep the building in good shape and continuing to improve, both for today and tomorrow.-From the University YMCA Stategic Plan
