Communiversity
At its April 28, 2009 meeting, the Board of Governors of the University YMCA, voted to discontinue the Communiversity program. The decision came after a six month review of the program which resulted in a report to the Board. The report (a copy avaiable on this website) which had three basic recommendations concluded that:
“The University YMCA should end Communiversity as an ongoing program. Based on this review, it was clear to all involved that the Communiversity program was no longer a viable or effective program. Decreasing enrollment, alternative programs and limited resources were all contributing factors. And although there are a handful of popular classes, it is hard to support investing the costs and staff time to maintain the program (recruiting instructors, producing a catalog, organizing registration, processing fees, answering questions, handling complaints, processing reimbursements for cancelled classes, generating publicity, etc) for a handful of classes."
While there is certainly a sense of sadness that accompanies this decision, we are also filled with great pride for the work that has been done and for the thousands who have benefited from these mutual learning opportunities over the last 32 years. The decision also brings a sense of excitement and expectation as we begin to explore new programs to continue the Communiversity legacy of engagement and education. Ideas and input into the direction such programming might take are welcome and invited.
