Did You Know?
Historical Roots & Purpose
- The University YMCA has a long legacy of international engagement dating back to 1925, with the first International Banquet hosting 300 students from 29 countries, in collaboration with the YWCA and Wesley Foundation.
- These events were created to build cross-cultural understanding and offer a welcoming environment for international students far from home.
Evolution Over Time
- In the 1950s, the YMCA established a regular “International Supper” series held every other Sunday. Each dinner showcased cuisine, music, and storytelling from different countries—drawing over 200 attendees.
- By the 1980s and 1990s, the program evolved into what became known as the International Dinner, enriched by partnerships with the University’s Office of International Student Affairs and student cultural organizations.
Human Connection & Hospitality
- Leaders like John Price emphasized that the heart of the YMCA’s international programming was individual friendship, not just event logistics. This people-first approach created a home away from home for students from around the globe.
- Staff like Maria Somma reinvigorated these traditions in the '80s-'90s, adding coffee hours, receptions, and political forums to promote intercultural dialogue.

Real Impact
Legacy & Impact
- These dinners were never just about food—they were about building global citizenship on campus, celebrating diversity, and strengthening a culture of hospitality.
- The YMCA has consistently filled a unique role, complementing formal university services with community, care, and connection.
