Babatunde Amao
Governor
Babatunde Elijah Amao is a dual-licensed attorney, admitted to practice law in both Nigeria and the State of New York. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in 2018 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2019. In pursuit of advanced legal education, he completed his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign in 2021, concentrating in Corporate, Commercial, and International Trade Law. He was sworn into the New York State Bar in 2025. Currently, Babatunde is pursuing a postgraduate degree in Public Administration at the University of Illinois Springfield, with a concentration in Public Policy. He serves as the Director of Health & Disability Policy and Advocacy at Champaign County Health Care Consumers (CCHCC), where he leads efforts to support medically vulnerable populations, particularly in navigating complex disability benefits systems. Previously, Babatunde worked as an Assistant In-House Counsel in the Office of Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, where he supported legislative research, policy analysis, and legal drafting within the General Assembly. Deeply committed to community service, Babatunde has held various volunteer roles across the Champaign-Urbana area. He has served as a two-time youth soccer coach with the Urbana Park District, a food pick-up driver for the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, and a food server for the Hope Center Food Pantry. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Scott Bennett Administrative Building Dedication Committee. His connection with the University YMCA began when he attended an event hosted by the New American Welcome Center, which continues to inspire his passion for inclusive and justice-centered public service. Outside of his professional and academic commitments, Babatunde enjoys reading, watching movies and shows, playing and watching soccer, and engaging in acts of service.
